Bach's Touch

Audio description

Kinetic Tactile Music Sculpture (electronics, solenoids, polycarbonate, 3D printed bioplastic)

Dimensions: 14” x 8” x 4”

Bach’s Touch is a kinetic tactile music sculpture. This piece engages three senses simultaneously. These sensory experiences are derived from a piece of music, J.S. Bach’s Invention 13. The tactile and visual artistic modalities are linked through the rhythm of the music.

The sculpture surface is a thin plate of translucent plastic with a smooth matte texture left in swirling marks on the surface. The plate has four finger-sized holes in it, spanning an arc, with small blue cylinders below the surface of the holes. It also has a black button at the top. It is mounted to the white pedestal it sits on with screws through square shaped mounts. There is a set of headphones hanging from the pedestal. From a side view there are circuit boards, wires, and LEDs. Electromagnets that drive the blue cylinders to move are also visible.
