Eleven

Audio description

Laser-cut aluminum, urethane paint

Dimensions: 48” x 18”

Eleven is another piece in the series of visualized binary data. Each “pixel” in this piece becomes three dimensional when cut into aluminum.

The flat sheet of aluminum has many small square teeth cut into the inside of it. The cuts form eleven bands that cross the piece horizontally, one above the other. Inside of each band, the individual teeth can be seen and felt. The width and depth of a single tooth is the same as the thickness of the aluminum, an eighth inch or about the same as two quarters stacked together. The bands start at the top in a double banded pattern. They swell in the middle and thin out on the edges. The inside of all the bands is rippled with patterns of the square tooth-like features. The bands start out thick at the top of the piece and progressively become smaller until there are only a small amount of small square cutouts in the last band.
