Static, Frozen

Audio description

Matte photo print on aluminum Dibond with tactile sculpture (3D printed bioplastic, aluminum) and custom white enamel painted wood pedestal

Dimensions: 24” x 24” (Wall), 6” x 8” x 8” (Sculpture on custom 36” pedestal)

These artworks translate digital data into a visual and tactile form. Each image was generated from the 1s and 0s representing program files, 3D print files, word processing documents, and other mundane files found on a computer. Each pixel is a digit from the file, 0s as white, 1s as black. These pieces also include a tactile sculpture that represents a portion of the data. The sculptures are designed to be touched.

The two foot square print on the wall is black with small horizontal bands of white running across it. The bands are broken in many places, creating interrupted lines. The breaks create an image that has the randomness of TV static, but still with the visual simplicity of a small number of white lines being broken with black.

In the bottom right of the print is a portion that has red bands on a brown background, giving a contrasting square of color within the black and white.

The tactile sculpture sits on a white narrow pedestal, lines up exactly with the square outline of the eight inch sculpture. The sculpture is brown and red like the colors on the print, and the red portion is formed with small metal bricks that in the air conditioned gallery, are cool to the touch.
